I was romping around Twitter today…
And I came across a little bit of news on the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Origins game that sparked some thought within me.
The news was that Origins, upon release, will have some kind of multiplayer functionality included, though there wasn’t any information on exactly what that function may be it’s pretty much assumed that it’s going to be the same as it has been up until now, but with some minor improvements. In previous games, like A-Creed 3 and Black Flag, the multiplayer mode was almost purely a “hunt and kill” game with two teams or a free for all. I bought 3, but only really played the multiplayer a few times, never really finding much fun since other people had more of an idea of what was going on and I didn’t think the mode warranted much of my time.
But that got me thinking, what would the ideal Assassin’s Creed multiplayer experience be?
Assassin’s Creed has never really been about the multiplayer, as it’s predominantly a single-player experience what with the story of globe-trotting assassins and all. But the thing about the story is, it doesn’t really exist anymore. Ever since they killed off Desmond in the third game, the story has just spiraled down into a confusing mess, and the game has really just become all about the gameplay.
But what if they focused on the multiplayer? I think what Ubisoft should do is quit trying to do the story, and maybe do something more along the lines of the other games they’ve put out in recent years. Yeah, I’m talking about Watch Dogs and The Division, both games that had an open world to go around along with stronger multiplayer functions that allowed for more possibilities outside of a team deathmatch.
Yeah, I know those games really kind of sucked. But the ideas behind them weren’t so bad, they just were executed really, really poorly. I mean, I’ve played both those games and they just kind of seemed half-baked, but I could see that there was some real potential with what they were trying to do.
I’m telling you, I’d love for Ubisoft to make an online experience where hundreds of players are controlling their own assassins as they wander around this big map acting as their own special kind of vigilante, taking down enemies and gathering loot. And then you could scout out the other assassins and try to assassinate them and take their loot back to a safehouse or something, maybe build a guild of assassins, try to become the quintessential assassin of that world. You could make everyone weaker than you tremble with fear, and anyone who’s brave enough want to take you down.
I’m thinking it would work maybe like a GTA V kind of thing, combined with The Division’s Dark Zone system (except a lot better). And then the player assassins could also be completely anonymous, not really appearing on your minimap so you always have to be on your toes, ready for an attack at any second. And adding in the cover and sneak mechanics, making it so players can blend into a crowd, hunch around a corner waiting for you to turn it, it would be a giant game of hide-and-seek set to the extreme! It might not be a terribly original concept, but it just needs to be fun so that people will want to play it.
That’s the kind of s**t that I want to see in a multiplayer Assassin’s Creed game, and I think there are definitely others who feel the same way.
