I think the ‘X’ naming trend is beginning to take hold
I’ve never really been one to look at Apple products and think “I want to buy this”, and looking at the iPhone X, I still don’t think that.
But hey, it’s nothing against Apple, it’s just that they’re perpetually trying to relive the success they had when they pioneered personal computers and subsequently started the smartphone revolution. Yes, they’ve had successes, but the iPhone has turned into a shadow of its former self. There was a time when I would be interested in the next iPhone variation, but that was when they hadn’t already done everything that is cool. Now it seems like every time they release a new iPhone, it’s something that was forced to be innovative, like the iPhone 5 which changed the charging port for some reason, and the iPhone 7 which tried to tell people that wired earbuds were prehistoric.
But what is it with the iPhone X that’s got me so hot and bothered? Well, it’s the fact that they’re basically doing what Microsoft’s doing with the Xbox. They’re making what they’re trying to sell as the most powerful smartphone ever, though it doesn’t really live up to the name when compared to the other beasts of the mobile phone market. And it’s not even like they’re releasing this on its own, it’s coming out alongside the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, I don’t even know what’s up with that. I don’t want to be that guy, but phones are just phones, there comes a point where the speed of the phone is negligible.
Although as stupid as that may be, there is something else that might carry the iPhone X to victory over the iPhone 8, the screen. As it would happen, Apple decided to upgrade the display in a major way, in not only making it go from LED to OLED but the screen now all but completely covers the front side of the phone meaning, yes, the home button has officially been retired. Now the only way to turn on your phone is by swiping up from the bottom of the screen, so that’s cool I guess. It’s kind of like the farthest you can go screen-wise. Like, you know you can’t just keep increasing the size of the phone just to increase the screen size, there comes a point where there is a definitive size, but the screen is the phone. That’s what’s happening here, but only partially.
In conclusion, I’m going to be like every other cool guy when I say that a phone is a phone, and this is getting a bit ridiculous for my taste. I’m perfectly fine with the phone I have now, the screen is even cracked and I barely care, all I do is watch Youtube videos and browse Reddit on it, so all it needs to do is have internet access and a screen.
But if you want the latest and greatest in Apple products, then, by all means, go ahead. No one can stop you.
