No Man’s Sky is an Alternate Reality

It’s all in the ARG, baby!

That’s right, it’s exactly what it means. But what does it mean? Well, I’ll tell you.

No Man’s Sky, despite being one of the biggest disappointments of the past couple years, is still going hard at making their game more fun to play with content patches and big updates.

And then there’s the ARG that’s been going on for the past month, a journey through decoded information, which all began with a message.

Or rather, it started with multiple packages sent out to the moderators of the NMS Reddit page, when they got sent to them a poster and a cassette tape to decode for further clues on what Hello Games has been up to for the past few months. Decoding the tape lead them through a series of bread crumbs which eventually (and recently) took them to this document. a Top-Secret PDF related to the apparently very very classified Project Waking Titan.

What is Waking Titan? You may ask. Well…nobody really knows for sure. All the document says is that it whoever sent this out extends their appreciation to anyone and everyone who has contributed to the ‘Mercury subroutine’ up until this point. We don’t really know what that is either, but the document says:

We hope you’ve enjoyed the successful distribution of 180 Access IDs, and we hope you’ll appreciate the other interesting artifacts we have in store for you going forward. We intend to keep the process alive until the completion of Project Waking Titan in August.

Ok, so the main thing that this tells us is that the next major content patch, ‘Waking Titan’, should be coming out sometime this August. They’ve sent out some ‘Access IDs’, and they’re thinking we’ll like what we see in the patch. But it doesn’t stop there,

It is important to mention that we are very excited by the coming Phases 2 and 3 input from the Mercury Subroutine will pave the way toward new experiences in version 1.3 of a familiar universe. We look forward to the successful conclusion of the ground-breaking experiment.

The document is then signed ‘S.M.’ which is almost certain to mean Sean Murray, the brainchild of the game.

Yeah, so this pretty much confirms they’ve got something pretty big lined up for the next update, 1.3. Judging by how they’ve had us go through all this to find this one document, I guess we should be pretty excited.

The last piece of this puzzle coming in the form of a website made by the Atlas Foundation’s Citizen Science Division. Once loaded, the site prompts you to put in your email, once done you’ll be subscribed to the site and receive a survey to go through, which once done will allow you to sign up for a chance to receive a level 4 Atlas Pass. Atlas Passes are among the most important items in the game, and allow you to go through special locked doors in-game. Up until this point, only three versions of the passes have been available, I can only imagine that level 4 will allow you to find the meaning of life or something magical like that. Who knows? We’ll just have to wait and see.

So, what do you think about all this? Are you d**n excited for the next content update?
